Flash Mob Litter Roundup
Keep California Beautiful and McDonald's are proud to present
"Power of Many"
As part of the Great American CleanupTM in California, Keep California Beautiful (KCB) partnered with 27 McDonald’s locations in the Sacramento area and 21 McDonald's locations in the Bay Area to pilot the 1st Flash Mob Litter Roundup. McDonald’s provided locations for volunteers to meet up and participate in litter roundup/collection in public spaces nearby.
At each location, we had individual(s) to spearhead the action by wearing the gold KCB hat and bring groups together from neighborhoods for 60 minutes or less on Sunday, May 22, 2011 to make a difference.
It's as simple as 1, 2, 3….
- Walk, bike, run, skateboard or carpool to a participating location.
- Please sign and bring a waiver form (and if you're under 18, get your parent/guardian to sign it too!) so we account for your participation when you pick up cleanup supplies (bags and gloves) from a McDonald's employee of volunteer leader at each of the participating locations.
- After cleaning up the litter along your walk, return to the McDonald's location by the designated time to properly dispose of or recycle the litter you cleaned up and remember to get your volunteer thank you package of reusable bags and other items sponsored by KCB and McDonald's!
This can be a fun, family-friendly “Eco-Walk” with volunteers getting some exercise by walking the nearby area to collect the litter that accumulates in our public spaces such as sidewalks, parking lots, parks, bus stops, and schoolyards. You'll be amazed at the difference just a few volunteers can make at each location in such a short amount of time!
Below are the locations we cleaned up in 2011. Come back soon to see all the brand new locations we'll be using to host the 2012 event!

Studies published in 2009 show that 79% of the over 51 billion pieces of litter scattered over our nation’s roadways and communities are comprised of tobacco, paper and plastic items. 91% or more than 46.6 billion of those items are smaller than four inches in size. The intent of this activity is to get the “litter” that most people walk by, such as snack wrappers, food wrappers, drink cups, beverage containers, various paper items, tobacco related litter, etc. Please do not pick up sharp objects, items that may be hazardous, or are too large to carry in a litter bag.
